Stockholm South Citadel Band
Stockholm South Citadel Band of The Salvation Army was formed in 1999 through the merging of four corps in southern Stockholm (Stockholm 3, Stockholm 4, Stockholm 7 and Älvsjö Corps). The bands of Stockholm 3 and Stockholm 7 joined then to form Stockholm South Citadel Band. Both of these bands have more than 100 year’s history.
Stockholm South Citadel Band is a brass band consisting of 35 musicians. The band belongs to The Salvation Army Corps on Hornsgatan in the southern part of Stockholm. Its prime mission is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and accompany and support the worship services at the corps. The bandsmen look upon this as their first and foremost duty, but they also take part in other corps activities. Some serve as local officers, Sunday school teachers and also as instructors for the Young People’s band.
Stockholm South Citadel Band also participates in church services, concerts and outdoor meetings.
The band has a rich variety of musical styles and expressions, stirring, joyful, quiet, challenging and performed with a deep dedication to the spiritual message.
Through the years, the band has performed together with many famous Swedish artists and especially together with the world famous Stockholm Bach Choir in a series of annual Christmas concerts.
Stockholm 3 Band
Stockholm 3 Band was inaugurated in July 1887. Throughout the years Stockholm 3 Band has had nine Bandmasters including Johan Jonasson, who wrote the march “Stockholm 3”.
The Stockholm 3 band has always maintained its ministry to the public through the marches and open-air meetings regularly held in the southern streets of Stockholm. The band has performed on Swedish radio and has also appeared on the Swedish TV.
During its most successful period Bandmasters Stig Bengtsson, Dawid Enkullen and Rune Rydberg led the band.
Stockholm 7 Band
Stockholm 7 Band had its very humble beginnings in 1895 in one of Stockholm’s poorest districts. At the turn of the century the band consisted of ten female musicians. When the Stockholm 7 Corps moved to a new corps hall in 1930, Karl Bengtsson was appointed Bandmaster. He and subsequently his son Stig were bandmasters until 1953 and built up the band to a very high musical standard.
This high musical standard has been maintained and further developed since 1953 under the leadership of bandmasters Erland Beijer, Per Ohlsson, Torgny Hanson and now Lars-Otto Ljungholm.
The Stockholm 7 Band has travelled extensively in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, England, Wales and twice to the USA. Numerous recordings have also been made and the band has participated in both radio and TV broadcasts in Sweden and other countries.
At the funeral of the Swedish King Gustaf VI Adolf in 1975, the Stockholm 7 band was privileged to be the only non-military band participating. The band also performed at the wedding of the current King Carl XVI Gustaf to Queen Silvia in 1978. |
